More than six decades ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke about the fundamental importance of the right to vote.
Dr. King said, “So long as I do not firmly and irrevocably possess the right to vote, I do not possess myself. I cannot make up my mind — it is made up for me. I cannot live as a democratic citizen.”
In 1965, Dr. King and other civil rights leaders won protection for that right.
But today, the right to vote is under attack in Congress, in state legislatures, and in the courts. We need laws that protect our right to vote and make voting more accessible.

John, the right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. No matter who you are and where you live, you should be able to participate in our democracy. That includes Black, brown, young and new Americans, who for too long have encountered barriers to this basic right.
Now more than ever, we need legislation that would strengthen and protect the right to vote.
The Freedom to Vote Act would limit the influence of big money in politics, modernize our voting system, ensure districts are drawn with fair representation and protect all Americans' right to vote.
