Wes Moore for Maryland

John,

Out of all the wise words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., one quote has stood out and guided my work throughout the years.

It reads:

“Philanthropy is commendable. But it must not cause the philanthropist to overlook the circumstances of economic injustice which make philanthropy necessary.”

I keep this quote by my desk because Dr. King’s timeless words helped to serve as a lodestar to guide my focus as we continue the fight for what’s right.

Today is a reminder of the work that needs to be done to make good on Dr. King's dream by making it within reach for our families and communities, our most vulnerable and most neglected.

We must address the longstanding systems that hold people back and work together to create generational change to make sure every Marylander has the opportunity to succeed.

As we reflect on Dr. King’s legacy today, remember his message that doing what is commendable is not enough. Removing the barriers to justice is our life’s work. Not just today, but every day.

Elevate,

Wes Moore
