Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we celebrate Dr. King’s life and legacy.
He dedicated his career to fighting for civil rights and equal opportunity — to ensuring that all Americans have equal freedom to vote and equal say in the decisions that impact our lives.
But the very rights Dr. King fought for are still under attack today.
Since the 2020 election, more than 1,300 restrictive voting bills have been introduced in state legislatures across the country. Last year, 18 states enacted 34 laws that could make voting more difficult, with the majority of these laws disproportionately affecting communities of color.
We're witnessing an attempt to erode our democracy’s highest ideals.
Today, you will hear many politicians quote Dr. King. Some will post his words about fighting injustice as they continue to prop up false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. They will laud his call for compassion as they try to strip millions of Americans of their right to vote. And they will praise his message as they willfully make a mockery of his words for their own political gain.
So, today and every day, we must not just remember Dr. King’s words, but also act on them. As he said: “The time is always ripe to do right. Now is the time to make real the promise of democracy.” At Fair Fight Action, we will continue working to defend the freedom to vote and ensure equal access to the ballot box.
Thank you for everything you do to help ensure access to democracy for all.
