*LANSING, Mich.*—Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer issued a proclamation declaring Monday, January 15, 2024, as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Michigan, honoring the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Governor Whitmer and Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II call on Michiganders to reflect on the life of Dr. King and commit themselves to continuing his work to advance social justice, equality, and freedom for all.

“This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, I encourage every Michigander to reflect on the life of Dr. King and how we can all work together to build a more just, free, and prosperous Michigan for all,” said *Governor Whitmer*. “Dr. King fought against injustice, discrimination, and hate. He was a proud American patriot who brought our nation closer to its highest ideals. By following his example, we can build on his legacy and make a real difference in people’s lives together.”

"Dr. King was a visionary leader who used the power of his example to create real change,” said* Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, Michigan’s first Black lieutenant governor*. “Every Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Michiganders come together to reflect on Dr. King’s life and legacy and recommit to carrying his work forward. I encourage every Michigander to spend time today giving back and improving our communities. Let us keep standing tall for an equitable, prosperous, and just Michigan where everyone can reach their full potential.”

Congress designated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day as the third Monday in January, coinciding with Dr. King's birthday. This year marks the 38th observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
