Big news just broke in the Michigan Senate race: an outside spending group is launching a nearly seven-figure advertising campaign supporting one of my Republican opponents, Mike Rogers.
He doesn't even have his own ads running at the moment - instead, he’s relying on an outside group, funded by anonymous donors, to do the talking for him.
It’s a purchase of $974,000 for TV commercials, 7 months before his crowded primary in August, and 10 months ahead of the general election. GOP candidates have leaned more heavily on super PACs in recent years because they aren’t raising as many small dollar donations, and they prefer anonymous money.
We knew this kind of spending would eventually be a big part of this race, and now it has begun.
So what does this mean for us?
It's an unfortunate advantage for our opponent in a race that is likely to be a close one. He will have huge sums of money spent on his behalf to introduce him to Michiganders before anyone else in the race goes on the air.
Elissa is no stranger to these outside spending campaigns. She's faced millions and millions of dollars of ads spent against her in her tough congressional races from these groups and won each time.
She won because people like you answered the call to help her win her House races. Now she needs us all if she's going to get to the Senate and keep it out of Republican control.
