U.S. government employees from nearly two dozen departments are gearing up to stage a significant walkout on Tuesday, expressing their dissatisfaction with the Biden administration's approach to the Gaza conflict. The development, first reported by the Middle East-focused publication Al-Monitor, reveals growing discontent among federal workers.
Organizers of this dissent campaign, working in collaboration with Feds United for Peace, have disclosed that hundreds of government workers are planning to observe a "Day of Mourning" to mark the 100th day of Israel's military operation in Gaza. The participants hail from a diverse array of federal departments, including the Executive Office of the President, the National Security Agency, the Departments of State, Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs, along with US Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Naval Research Laboratory.
This impending walkout underscores the mounting frustration among U.S. officials regarding the Biden administration's reluctance to call for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza. According to one of the organizers, the protest has grown out of a collective desire to influence the administration's policy on this critical issue, with the physical act of dissent being a rather unusual manifestation.
However, the planned walkout has not gone without criticism. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) strongly rebuked the government employees participating in the protest. He asserted that any worker walking off the job to protest U.S. support for Israel is neglecting their responsibility and betraying the trust of taxpayers. Johnson went on to state that those taking part in the walkout deserve to be fired, and he, along with Oversight Chairman Comer, is committed to ensuring appropriate disciplinary proceedings are initiated against them.
The internal divisions within the government regarding the Gaza conflict became apparent when the U.S. initiated the supply of weapons and ammunition to Israel for its fight against Hamas. Several letters expressing dissent over the administration's strategy were sent through the State Department's confidential "dissent channel." Additionally, there have been public resignations in protest of the administration's policies related to the Gaza conflict.
One of the walkout organizers, instead of resigning, emphasized having a "moral obligation and a patriotic duty" to influence change from within. They criticized the White House for what they deemed as poor policy choices, including obstructing UN ceasefire resolutions and selling arms to Israel without going through Congress. The discontent within the federal workforce highlights the complexity and sensitivity surrounding U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East.
