Williams Weekly
Dear Texans,
It was another busy week working on important issues facing our state, our nation, and the world. Rest assured, I am fighting each day to keep our communities safe and uphold the values of our district. Read below for an update on my work serving you.
It's Time to Impeach Mayorkas
Since Biden took office there have been over 6.7 million encounters at our Southern Border and over 1.7 million known gotaways. This is an invasion on American soil, and Biden and Mayorkas have allowed this crisis to spiral out of control. For 3 years, Mayorkas has refused to enforce law and order, abused his authority, and misled Congress and the American people. Mayorkas admitted to Border Patrol agents that the current rate of release for illegal immigrants apprehended at the southern border is above 85%, yet he still refuses to act. This week the House Committee on Homeland Security began impeachment proceedings on Secretary Mayorkas. He has abused his authority, causing a fentanyl crisis, rising crime and cartel activity, and strained U.S. resources. These failures are intentional. It is past time to hold this administration accountable.
House Committee on Small Business Hearing
I led the first committee hearing of 2024 to discuss how lawlessness is impacting Main Street America. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, but on top of inflation, supply chain disruptions, and worker shortages, small businesses are also facing out-of-control crime. It shouldn’t be the norm to force small businesses to hire private security or shorten operational hours to keep their employees and customers safe. We must stop allowing criminals to get away with their crimes while small businesses are left picking up the pieces. It’s time to take action to protect our nation's job creators from bad actors. As Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business, I will keep working towards solutions that allow Main Street – and all Americans – to operate and live in a safe environment. Prosecutors need to prosecute, and police need to be allowed to police their communities. Watch my opening remarks here.
House Committee on Financial Services Hearing
Across the country, Americans are facing affordable housing shortages. The Biden administrations’ out of control spending has led to record-high inflation and increased interest rates which has driven up the cost of housing, making the dream of home ownership increasingly difficult and unlikely for many families. This week the House Committee on Financial Services held a hearing on oversight of the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Federal Housing Administration. Watch my line of questioning here.
Stopping Biden’s America Last – China First Policies
The Federal Highway Administration submitted a rule that waives the Buy America requirements for electric vehicle chargers built in the U.S. This allows for federally funded electric charging stations to be built in the U.S. without the use of American steel, iron, manufactured products, and construction materials, ultimately sending billions of taxpayer dollars to China. When taxpayer dollars are spent, they should be used to invest in American businesses and quality manufacturing. I can tell you right now what Chinese-made taxpayer-funded charging stations would look like. Up for a week, broken, vandalized, and never fixed. I am proud this legislation passed the House to put a stop to the Biden Administration’s America last – China first policies. Watch my floor remarks here.
Fighting for Tax Relief for Main Street
As Chairman of the House Committee on Small Business and owner and operator of a small business in Texas for over 52 years, I am uniquely aware of the relief full-expensing has provided to businesses for decades. Watch my floor speech on section 174 of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act here.
Cutting Biden’s Burdensome Regulations on Small Businesses
I delivered floor remarks in support of H.J. Res. 98 to rescind the National Labor Relation Board’s Joint Employer Rule that would be disastrous for small businesses across the country. This burdensome rule would prevent businesses from growing. Amid skyrocketing inflation, worker shortages, and a broken supply chain, we should not be pushing yet another confusing regulation onto Main Street.
In Case You Missed It!
In the media, I discussed the top issues facing our nation. From the national security crisis spiraling out of control at our southern border to the crime crisis that is plaguing Main Street, I am committed to keeping Texans safe. Watch on Fox here and NewsNation here.
In God we trust,
Roger Williams
