The House Judiciary Committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), has launched an investigation into the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, headed by Fani Willis. The inquiry focuses on concerns about politically motivated prosecutions and potential misuse of federal funds.
This may have significant consequences for Nathan J. Wade, the top prosecutor under Willis.
The committee is particularly interested in the indictment of former President Donald Trump in August 2023, orchestrated by Wade and Willis. The action has drawn attention due to its unprecedented nature and possible political motivations. The letter states, "The Committee on the Judiciary continues to conduct oversight of politically motivated prosecutions by state and local officials."
Adding to the controversy are reports of Wade receiving over $650,000 for his role in the case, raising questions about the ethical and legal implications of such a substantial payment.
Willis, as the District Attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, has been leading the high-profile investigation into former President Trump’s actions related to the 2020 presidential election. The case has garnered significant media attention due to its potential implications.
Allegations have arisen regarding extravagant expenditures by Wade and Willis, funded by the FCDAO (Fulton County District Attorney’s Office). If proven true, these claims could indicate a serious misuse of public funds and a breach of ethical standards expected from public prosecutors.
“Although Ms. Willis has so far refused to cooperate with our oversight of the FCDAO’s coordination with other politically motivated prosecutions, invoices that you submitted for payment by the FCDAO, and made public as part of this court filing, highlight this collusion,” stated the letter.
The inquiry also highlights potential collusion between the FCDAO and partisan political actors. Detailed invoices and communications suggest a coordinated effort between the DA’s office and various political entities, including the White House and the January 6 Committee. This raises concerns about the impartiality of the FCDAO’s prosecutions and the integrity of the legal process.
On Thursday, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) filed a criminal conduct complaint alleging that the Georgia prosecutor abused her powers and taxpayer dollars by allegedly hiring and generously compensating a subordinate with whom she was having a secret romantic relationship.
A Georgia Fox affiliate reported that Rep. Greene filed her complaint with Republican Governor Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr, asking both to investigate whether the Democrat mixed politics with pleasure when she paid special prosecutor Nathan Wade approximately $700,000 to involve himself in her prosecution of Trump and his co-defendants.
DA Willis has alleged that the former president, along with Rudy Giuliani, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and more than a dozen others, committed racketeering by attempting to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.
Earlier this week, DA Willis was served with a surprise subpoena to testify in Wade’s divorce trial, complicating her effort to stay out of the spotlight while keeping the focus on Trump. She is already contending with a probe by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee regarding whether her office abused taxpayer resources by coordinating her prosecution with Biden Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith.
Meanwhile, her efforts to advance the case to completion before the 2024 election “seems unrealistic,” according to recent remarks by a Georgia judge.
