In 2022, book bans led by extreme Republicans surged to a 21 year high.

So, Illinois Democratic Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias fought back with legislation to prohibit book bans -- making Illinois the first state in the country to block these dystopian bills.

Remember: Secretaries of States work goes beyond running elections! In many states, including Illinois, they also serve as the chief librarian!

But in today’s polarized environment, extremists are more emboldened than ever. Across the nation, we’re seeing everyone from librarians all the way to secretaries of state become the target of threats and harassment simply for doing their jobs.
