On January 15th at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, the GLAAD community will receive the Governor's Award during the live Emmy telecast on Fox. This award recognizes nearly 40 years of LGBTQ visibility on TV and the profound, transformational, and long-lasting impact our community has had on television and culture at large. GLAAD continues to correct misinformation

After a recent school shooting in Iowa, right-wing influencers took to social media to push the narrative that transgender and nonbinary people are perpetrators of gun violence, a false accusation that quickly spread on social media. GLAAD and other organizations swiftly responded with data supporting that even if the shooter was a member of the LGBTQ community, they would be in an incredibly small minority. Media outlets and leaders have an obligation to humanize the victims and survivors during this painful time, not to sensationalize false narratives that distract from the real issues that perpetuate gun violence.

2023 year in review: anti-LGBTQ online hate and disinformation

Looking back on 2023, we saw a proliferation of online hate and disinformation against LGBTQ people — rhetoric that has been echoed across political stages, in mass media, and among legislative bodies. As documented in the latest Social Media Safety Index (SMSI), most platforms fall short in protecting LGBTQ people especially when it comes to inadequate content moderation and enforcement (including both inaction on anti-LGBTQ hateful content and over-moderation/censorship of LGBTQ users); harmful and polarizing algorithms; and an overall lack of transparency and accountability across the industry, among many other issues.
