And no, it’s not because it’s January in the Midwest. Pointing to Nikki Haley’s "friends in the defense industry and military industrial complex" and the likelihood that Haley is set to lose to Trump in the contest, Loomer thinks this "looks like weather manipulation" to somehow aid the one-time Trump ally in her quest to topple the disgraced ex-president. Ooookaaaay.

Far-right House Speaker Mike Johnson said he intends to stand by a previously announced bipartisan deal on funding the government for most of this year, putting him at odds with somehow-even-further-right-wing goons in the Republican Party. The deal by itself does not guarantee there will be no government shutdown, but merely provides a common overall number that lawmakers must make individual spending bills fit into. Familiar faces in the Republican clown caucus have predictably balked at the agreement, renewing talk that Johnson, who only ascended to the speakership in late October after Kevin McCarthy was unceremoniously ousted, could face his own challenge for the post.

States had to tell the federal government by Jan. 1 if they planned to run a Summer EBT program in 2024, providing low-income families $120 for each of their school-aged children to buy and cook food at home over the summer months. As of Wednesday, 35 states opted in. Together they are expected to reach more than 20 million school-aged children. But another 9.5 million students who would have been eligible will likely go without after their states declined to participate this year. Some states cited cost and administrative burden, while in others Republican governors balked at the supposedly unforgivable act of accepting federal money and helping the food insecure. For gosh sakes, someone's gotta teach these kids about the virtues of boot straps and the dangers of safety nets before it's too late!
