Working to Protect
Americans' Retirement Savings

America is facing a retirement savings crisis. Massive price spikes seen over the past two years have made saving for retirement even harder. A key to a successful retirement includes Social Security, Medicare, and personal savings. I’m working to protect all three.

This week, during a House Financial Services Committee hearing, I brought attention to the need to help individuals save for retirement, not make it more difficult.

Unfortunately, some proposals seem to be moving in the opposite direction. Recently, the Department of Labor proposed a rule that will make it harder for Americans to save. The regulation would impose red tape, leading to higher costs and fewer retirement options. This creates a hurdle for families that could benefit from more affordable options.

Ensuring Taxpayer Dollars
are Properly Spent

Last week, I visited the U.S.–Mexico border to learn about the ongoing border crisis firsthand. We are seeing an unprecedented number of migrants at the border, and our inability to address this crisis is worsening the humanitarian, health, and national security challenge

As migrants are sent around the country, they are putting added pressure on scarce public resources. This week, I asked Department of Urban Development (HUD) Director Marcia Fudge how HUD is responding to the influx of migrants in our communities. I asked her if HUD tracks the amount of taxpayer money that is being spent on housing illegal immigrants. Her answer made clear that no, the agency does not track how much taxpayer money is spent on housing for illegal migrants. In my view, this is not acceptable. We owe it to American taxpayers to be able to tell them how their money is being spent.

Should Investment Decisions be Based on Returns or Politics?

The federal government and proxy advisors are attempting to use your savings to advance their political agenda. I introduced the Protecting Americans’ Retirement Savings from Politics Act. The legislation is focused on improving the shareholder proposal and proxy voting advice process to prioritize retirement savings over partisan politics. I want to hear from you. Do you believe investment decisions should be based on risks and returns OR social and political factors?

Water Resources Development Act

With the ongoing winter storms in Wisconsin, I wanted to highlight my work to repair our local infrastructure. In January 2020, winter storms and high-water levels caused significant damage to many Great Lakes communities’ water infrastructure, including the Racine harbor breakwater. The breakwater is important to protecting Racine’s waterfront and Root River revitalization plans. Similar issues exist in Kenosha and Milwaukee County.

This week, I proposed language for the 2024 Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) to help address this issue. My proposed language would provide an additional avenue for publicly owned, community harbors, particularly ones in the Great Lakes, to receive federal assistance for certain water infrastructure projects.

If this language is included in a finalized 2024 WRDA bill, it will help Wisconsin communities complete important water infrastructure projects and harbor maintenance would qualify for needed assistance.
