SOUNDING THE ALARM ON CHINESE OWNERSHIP OF OREGON TIMBERLAND

A Bloomberg report published this week uncovered that the second-largest foreign owner of United States land owns 198,000 acres of forestland in Oregon. The individual, who is a member of the Chinese Communist Party, owns around 33,000 acres of the Bull Springs Skyline Forest just west of Bend in the 5th District.

Foreign ownership of U.S. land by our adversaries is a serious problem that has rightfully sparked unease among farmers, ranchers, and foresters across the country. I’m deeply concerned that a member of the Chinese Communist Party owns tens of thousands of timberland acres – one of our most precious and finite resources – in my district.

I’m proud to be an original cosponsor of the Stop CCP Land Act and the Protecting America’s Agricultural Land from Foreign Harm Act – two proposals that seek to prevent adversaries of the U.S. from purchasing our valuable land. With conflict and uncertainty on the rise around the world, including increasingly aggressive rhetoric and actions from China, we cannot hesitate to stand up to bad actors. I’ll be taking further action in the coming weeks to ensure our land and national security are protected.

SUPPORTING TAIWAN

Today, the House passed the Taiwan Non-Discrimination Act, PROTECT Taiwan Act, and the China Exchange Rate Transparency Act with bipartisan support.

I proudly joined my colleagues in voting for these bills to support Taiwan, hold China accountable, and deter further aggression to promote stability in the region ⬇️

WORKING TO PREVENT STILLBIRTHS

Despite the impressive technological and medical advancements we’ve made in recent years, the stillbirth rate in the United States has remained stagnant for three decades. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stillbirth affects one in 170 pregnancies, with over 21,000 babies born still each year – meaning 57 babies are dying every day. In the U.S., the annual number of stillbirths far exceeds the number of deaths among children aged 0-14 years from accidents, preterm birth, SIDS, drownings, fire, and flu combined.

As a mom, it’s frustrating to see that more progress hasn’t been made towards preventing stillbirths.

That’s why I’m backing the bipartisan Stillbirth Health Improvement and Education (SHINE) for Autumn Act. This proposal would enhance data collection, research, education, and awareness by creating the first comprehensive, federal-state partnership to reduce stillbirth rates in the U.S.

MEETING WITH OREGONIANS

I had a productive meeting earlier this week with Kent Ziegler, president of the Oregon City Business Alliance. Kent and I discussed the alliance's priorities, including ways to build connections with surrounding communities and the impact tolling could have on local businesses.

It was also great to chat with members of the ESOP Association, including a constituent with Bob's Red Mill in Milwaukie in my D.C. office on Thursday. Thanks for stopping by!
