Late last year we highlighted the problem with fossil fuel exports, particularly Liquefied "Natural" Gas, or LNG. Quick recap below if you're just tuning in. But more than 300,000 people, including a lot of you, have already signed petitions and sent letters to President Biden, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
And we're getting clear signals that the message to stop fossil fuel exports is being received. FERC delayed its decision on the CP2 LNG export facility last year, and news reports indicate the Biden Administration is "reconsidering" its policy on fossil fuel exports.
Now is the perfect moment to take the streets and demand President Biden follow through with a clear and bold action to end the era of fossil fuels fast, fair, and forever. As I foreshadowed in my last message of the year, we've already got several events planned for the next four weeks.
The US is making some (not enough!) progress on reducing demand for fossil fuels, and replacing polluting sources of energy with clean renewables — mostly thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. But at the same time domestic renewables are up, so is fossil fuel extraction, refining, and especially exports.
In fact, President Biden has approved so much new fossil fuel infrastructure, that the pollution is more than offsetting the climate progress he's made – causing the US to become a global leader, in the wrong direction, on climate pollution.
But the main thing we want to do over the next four weeks is turn up the pressure on the Biden Administration and others to end the era of fossil fuels fast, fair, and forever. And that means taking to the streets for non-violent, direct action. Next week's events in New Orleans are just the start. We're also working with allies on a distributed day of action to stop the Mountain Valley Pipeline, with targets like banks and contractors all over the country. And we're helping to plan a mass direct action at the US Department of Energy in early February. You can get all the details in the blog, but for now — make a plan to join us in New Orleans.
See you in the streets,
