Friend --
As we all adapt to living and leading during the COVID-19 outbreak, I am reaching out to update you on how the New Leaders Council staff and chapters are working to protect our community’s health and safety.
All of us are part of families and communities whose health and livelihoods could be drastically impacted. Not to mention, many in our #NLCFamily are working and living in communities on the frontlines of managing the response and in areas that will be hit the hardest by COVID-19.
During these dynamic circumstances, where things are changing quickly, staff and chapters will continue to keep you updated on how the #NLCFamily is taking additional precautions for upcoming Institutes, events and fundraisers. Recent updates from the national level are below:
Virtual Institutes: As we monitor the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, NLC is doing our part to slow the spread with physical distancing, while fostering social solidarity. NLC is going virtual on all meetings and Institutes through the end of April. Over the next few weeks, staff will also prepare for May Institute contingency plans, as the nation awaits more guidance from public health officials.
Online Trainings: NLC will be rolling out digital education content for current fellows and alumni including keynote speakers, moderated panel conversations and training. Stay tuned for more information on this online content.
Event Updates: This weekend's Women's Summit has been postponed and will be offered via digital content. We will stay in touch with you about ongoing plans for NLC's Annual Convention in August.
Connecting Digitally: We understand the importance of connecting with others, particularly in times of heightened stress, therefore, NLC is finding ways to connect our community virtually. NLC will be rolling out community Zoom lines for the #NLCFamily to connect in ways such as remote work support groups, book clubs, or game nights.
I know we all could use a reason to smile right now. Here is a snapshot of the Maine Chapter's Fellows showing off their jazz hands during their first virtual Institute. Our 2020 Fellows and volunteers are leading through these times with ingenuity and compassion. They have been incredibly inspiring to work with, and I hope it brings you some comfort to know the future is in good hands.

What has become clear through this public health crisis is the need for competent, skilled and connected local leaders to support our communities. NLC is proud of our work to train nearly 9,000 community leaders, many of whom are making a difference in this crisis.
Our fellows and alumni are working on the ground to address this challenge.
Some run community centers and homelessness programs, while others are working at the CDC and public health offices. They are teachers, nurses, and doctors on the frontlines. They are serving in elected office, managing state and local responses in the absence of coordinated federal support. Together, we can continue to equip and empower a rising generation of leaders.
Many have reached out asking how you can connect and help. NLC knows the importance of providing our community with the skills and training they need to be effective in these times and beyond. If you have the capacity, we hope you will consider making a tax-deductible gift to support our work [[link removed]] . As we look ahead, our world will need more community leaders to reimagine and rebuild our shared future when this pandemic passes.
Thank you for supporting the NLC community and for your leadership during these unprecedented times.
With you in spirit,
Clare Bresnahan English
