John,
In this election year, so much is at stake: There are forces trying to repeal our state’s historic cap-and-invest carbon pricing law, the strongest climate legislation in the country. Oil companies are price-gouging Washingtonians. Out-of-state investors seek to build projects on sacred Tribal lands. We all need the spark of hope and determination to fight for clean air and water, for climate justice, for economic justice, for Tribal sovereignty, for democracy.
Join me at Washington Conservation Action’s annual fundraising event Spark! Powering Transformative Change on Thursday, May 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of History and Industry (MOHAI) in Seattle. This evening will bring together the environmental and political community to support our work to protect people and nature as one.
Together, we are strong. Join us to celebrate in solidarity and to continue the work! [[link removed]]

Check out our key speakers for the evening:
Bob Ferguson, attorney general and candidate for governor.
As attorney general, Ferguson created the Environmental Protection Division which pursues civil and criminal litigation to protect Washington’s diverse and beautiful ecosystems. In the last 13 years, the division has won 50 criminal convictions, including prosecuting Monsanto for pollution from PCBs, which are banned and dangerous to people’s health and to the environment. Ferguson has also prioritized racial justice and working with Washington’s Tribes. He formed the Wing Luke Civil Rights division and rolled out an environmental justice initiative even before the passage of the Healthy Environment for All (HEAL) Act in 2021. Four Tribal Nations have endorsed Ferguson for governor, as has WCA.
Kitsap County Commissioner Christine Rolfes, who recently left the state senate after a long career there. Rolfes was WCA’s 2023 Legislator of the Year. She will announce the 2024 recipient of this award.
Now a Kitsap County commissioner, Rolfes had a long career as one of the most passionate and dedicated environmental leaders in the Washington State Legislature. As a state senator, Rolfes fought for forestry policies that will ensure healthy state forestlands for future generations. She supported measures to clean up and restore Puget Sound. She was steadfast in her commitment to tackling dangerous pollution. During the 2023 legislative session and as the Senate’s lead budget writer, former Sen. Rolfes championed securing $83 million to store carbon in older, carbon-dense, structurally complex forests. With her leadership, communities statewide – urban, rural, and suburban – all received funding for climate action, which will pay dividends for public health and future generations.
Our close community partner from Yakima, Caty Padilla, Executive Director of Nuestra Casa will join us too! Nuestra Casa is an organization that enables immigrant women to create positive change in themselves, their families and their communities through education, empowerment, and mutual support
Caty is the daughter of immigrants who settled in the Lower Yakima Valley in 1990. She was raised like many farm worker’s children, migrating along the Yakima River throughout the valley as her parents looked for new job opportunities. Caty attended schools in the Toppenish, Granger and Wapato school districts. After graduating in 2007 she landed a full-time job that allowed her the flexibility she needed to enroll at Heritage University. Caty became Executive Director for Nuestra Casa in 2017. Caty is dedicated to helping immigrant women in the community prosper and to obtain learning opportunities that empower them to battle the inequities in our communities.
