I’m keeping up the fight for the rights and safety of our LGBTQ+ students.
While far-right extremists across the country continue to ban books in school libraries and discriminate against vulnerable LGBTQ+ students, I’m keeping up the fight to protect our LGBTQ+ kids and youth in California from these dangerous laws and policies.
On Monday, I led an amicus brief in support of Chico Unified School District’s policy to safeguard the privacy and safety of transgender and gender-nonconforming students — they’re doing right by the young people in their care.
On Wednesday, I issued a legal alert to all county, school district, and charter school boards and superintendents across California warning them against the use of forced outing policies. No school should put the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of students in danger by disclosing their transgender or gender-nonconforming status to others without their consent.
I also issued another legal alert this week to all school districts emphasizing their obligation to provide inclusive curricula, instructional materials, and books that reflect California’s diversity. Every student, no matter their background, has the right to see themselves reflected in the stories and lessons being taught in their classrooms.
As GOP-controlled states and school boards carry out discriminatory attacks on LGBTQ+ students, I will always fight for the rights, health, and safety of our children and young people.
