Hi John,
Monday is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, a holiday to celebrate Rev. Dr. King’s life and the enormous impact he had on the world. It’s also a chance for us to reflect on the ways we can continue Rev. Dr. King’s legacy by volunteering, organizing, and working for a fairer, more just world.
In honor of the holiday, I am sharing the work of some of our partner organizations committed to carrying on Rev. Dr. King’s work towards racial equity and civil rights.
Black Voters Matter works to protect voting rights and build power in communities across the United States. Venkayla Hines, Communications Director at Black Voters Matter, describes their work in partnership with Action Network:
“Here at Black Voters Matter, reaching Black voters and communities is essential to the work that we do to build power. Through its tools and resources, Action Network has helped Black Voters Matter engage and empower Black communities, coordinate voter registration efforts, initiate advocacy campaigns, and uplift initiatives that prioritize issues affecting Black voters and communities.”

The Power of One campaign, led by Broccoli City, is an innovative project that recognizes the power of collective efforts in driving meaningful change. Action Network & Action Builder partnered with the Power of One campaign at the 2023 Broccoli City Festival to invite festival goers to get involved and contribute towards the goal of 1 million positive acts. Mariah Brown, Strategic Partnerships Manager here at Action Network & Action Builder, summed it up this way:
“The true reward lies in knowing their actions are creating a ripple effect of positive change, inspiring others to take part, and shaping the future for generations to come. I was proud to join a few of our partners at the Broccoli City Festival in July. We hope that initiatives like the Power of One campaign show that our commitment to the progressive movement expands beyond developing best-in-class technology to being a true partner in this work.”

Center for Common Ground works to educate and empower voters in voter suppression states to engage in elections and advocate for their right to vote. Their work building power in on and off years will be essential to winning this November. Andrea Miller, Founding Board Member and Executive Director at Center for Common Ground, shares her perspective on the work:
“In many instances when people stop voting, there are barriers that they were just not able to overcome on their own. We did a survey with our partners at the Atlanta NAACP, and there were three main reasons that people gave for not voting. Reason #1, they didn’t know where to vote. Reason #2, they didn’t have a way to get there. And the distant third reason was they didn’t like the candidates. Our theory of change is if you only go after the consistent voters, that’s a recipe for losing the election.”
