Team,
First and foremost, I want to start by thanking the workers on the frontlines of this pandemic. Those keeping health care facilities running, keeping food available in stores and for delivery, keeping our streets and buildings clean and sanitized, responding to emergencies, and beyond are helping keep us safe and healthy right now. If that's you: thank you.
Now, I want to give you another update on the mission at hand: protecting folks from the spread of this pandemic and the economic fallout.
What we know:
-- Yesterday, the Senate passed a COVID-19 relief bill to ensure free testing, take steps to enact emergency paid sick leave, and expand food assistance and unemployment insurance during this crisis. The reality is this was several days overdue, but I am glad the Senate finally took action.
-- Next, Congress will consider further legislation to mitigate the economic impact on American families and businesses. Americans need an economic stimulus package to help them get through COVID-19 -- ASAP. Solutions should focus on making workers and small businesses whole and NOT be a giveaway to huge corporations and their CEOs.
What we're doing as a campaign:
-- My campaign is doing our part to flatten the curve by working remotely and suspending in-person events. We're planning next steps so we can keep campaigning virtually.
-- We will continue to fundraise so we can get our message out to Texans through phone calls, text messages, and ads because one thing has become starkly clear: we need a Senate that prioritizes our health care. If you'd like to pitch in, you can do so here >> [link removed]
Other campaigns can rely on the special interests to fill the gap, but I'm not taking corporate PAC money, so if we're going to win this election we need to keep hitting our fundraising goals.
-- However, I know that this is not an easy time for so many. If you'd like to pause receiving fundraising emails for the next few weeks, please let us know here -- I'll still keep in touch with important information and to ask your thoughts from time to time. >> [link removed]
What we need:
-- In the coming days, you'll start to hear scapegoating from public officials -- in fact, it's already started. We can't fall into the trap of division -- unity is critical right now. I'm urging all of our elected officials to put people over politics and focus on the mission at hand: getting through this with as little harm to the American people as possible.
-- Elected officials should work quickly to pass and implement immediate solutions to increase health care capacity to take care of the sick, and to ensure that our front-line health care workers have every health and safety protection we can provide -- especially adequate testing and personal protective equipment.
-- This should be a major wake-up call for our representatives. Texas has the highest uninsured rate in the nation, and it puts folks here at greater risk during this pandemic. We need a public health insurance option to ensure all Americans can receive health care without facing impossible financial choices.
We're all in this together, and we all need to do our part. If we do, we'll come out on the other side of this with less harm done and a model of solidarity and teamwork for generations to come.
We know what our mission is, so let's get it done.
