Dear Jack,

As a child, C.S. Lewis grew up during the pandemic of tuberculosis, which killed more than a million people a year in Europe. As a young man, he was wounded on the hellish frontlines of World War I. In middle age, he lived through the darkest years of World War II.

It was then that Lewis offered some profound advice applicable to our current situation. Weeks after the start of World War II, Lewis explained why he thought the pursuit of learning remained worthwhile in a time of crisis:

_“Human life has always been lived on the edge of a precipice. Human culture has always had to exist under the shadow of something infinitely more important than itself. If men had postponed the search for knowledge and beauty until they were secure, the search would never have begun.” _

Living in a pandemic is not a reason to avoid the biggest questions of human life. IT’S AN OCCASION TO GRAPPLE WITH THOSE QUESTIONS ANEW AND SUPPORT THE ORGANIZATIONS THAT DEAL WITH THEM ([link removed]) .

Millions of people and their children are now being asked to stay in their homes to slow the spread of infection. We understand that this situation is extremely challenging for some—especially those with young children.  BUT IT ALSO OFFERS AN OPPORTUNITY TO REACH CHILDREN AND ADULTS ALIKE WITH VIDEO CONTENT THAT POINTS TO A DESIGNED AND PURPOSEFUL UNIVERSE. Just imagine if your family, neighbors, and friends were to spend some of their newfound time exploring the exquisite design of the human body or investigating the positive implications of science for belief in God.

AT DISCOVERY INSTITUTE’S CENTER FOR SCIENCE AND CULTURE, WE ARE COMMITTING OURSELVES TO RAMPING UP THE RELEASE OF NEW RESOURCES DURING THIS PIVOTAL PERIOD:

* A few days ago, we posted to YouTube two new videos that demolish the myth that Christianity is anti-science.

* Yesterday, we released the first session from this year’s blockbuster Dallas Conference on Science and Faith.

* A few weeks from now, we plan to publish a new online course taught by CSC Director Stephen Meyer, author of _Signature in the Cell_ and _Darwin’s Doubt_.

* We are also exploring the option of live online events in coming months, and we are speeding up the publication of new books.

BUT TO UNDERTAKE THESE EFFORTS, WE NEED STABLE AND CONTINUING SUPPORT FROM OUR FRIENDS ([link removed]) .

I’m writing you from the Seattle area, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the United States. That’s where Discovery Institute is headquartered. Thankfully, our staff and their families are currently safe, and we have been able to reorganize to operate under new government restrictions. WE ARE PLANNING TO MOVE FULL-SPEED AHEAD WITH OUR INITIATIVES—SO LONG AS OUR RESOURCES ALLOW US TO DO SO.

If you are facing financial or other hardships right now, please do not donate. Your family comes first. BUT IF YOU ARE DOING OKAY—AND IF YOU WANT US TO BE ABLE TO MAXIMIZE THE CURRENT OPPORTUNITY—WE DEFINITELY WOULD BE GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT ([link removed]) .

With best regards,

John G. West, PhD
