Dear Friends,
?
During the legislative interim, I?ve really enjoyed traveling around the district attending events and and meeting with different groups and residents.
?
Yesterday, I had the most wonderful time spending the day at United South Central (USC) Schools in Wells. I shadowed two amazing school principals - elementary principal Jennifer Taylor and secondary principal Jen Bye.
This was a day for me to experience the daily job of a school principal, as well as teachers and staff.
I observed elementary and secondary classrooms, morning greetings and lunchroom supervision, dealing with behavior issues, and also took part in a roundtable discussion with some high school students, an afterschool meeting with teachers, administrators, and school board members, and more. I learned and experienced so much.
I was especially impressed at how USC has been proactive in already adopting a solid structured literacy reading program, in addition to having every teacher trained in the LETRS process.
These are all based on the science of reading, which drives proven and effective reading instruction.
?
A big thank you to principals Jennifer Taylor and Jen Bye for allowing me to shadow them, and also teachers Elizabeth Hanson, Adam Walker, Nathan Scruggs, Cody Huiras, Amy Stenzel, and Anne Feist for allowing me to observe in their classrooms, the senior high students who so kindly took part in our roundtable discussion, and all the students and staff who made me feel so welcome. I also loved the homemade Pavlova desert that the students from Mrs. Feist?s baking class shared with me!
?
Finally, thank you to the Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association and the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals for facilitating this experience. Great day!!
It won?t be long before lawmakers return to the Capitol, as the 2024 session will begin on February 12. Expect to see weekly updates once again after session has resumed.
?
Have a great weekend!
?
