John,
States like my home state of Ohio, Louisiana, and Georgia have already
postponed their primary elections to protect their residents from exposure
to coronavirus.
The public health risks from gathering in large numbers are real and
serious, but we can’t allow this to put democracy on hold.
We should move quickly to establish automatic vote-by-mail procedures
across the country so that citizens can continue to exercise their
constitutional right to vote in this crisis.
Senators Amy Klobuchar and Ron Wyden introduced a bill on the floor of the
U.S. Senate to do just that. It’s called the Natural Disaster and
Emergency Ballot Act of 2020, and it would guarantee every voter a secure
mail-in paper ballot and help states cover the cost of running elections
by mail.
It’s clear we need nationwide vote-by-mail procedures to protect our
democracy in the middle of this pandemic, and we need it right now.

It’s more clear now than ever how crucial a functioning government is for
our collective health and safety. That’s why we have to act quickly to
make sure everyone is able to exercise their right to vote safely and
securely.
Our progressive values are on the ballot in this year’s election, and we
can’t afford to put democracy on hold.
