Jack, news outlets have been hammered with financial hardships for well over a decade. According to a Reuters Institute survey, the outlook for 2024 doesn't look any better:
Less than half of news leaders feel confident about their company’s prospects for the next 12 months for the second year running, according to a report looking at news media trends and predictions for 2024.
The concern mostly stems from a sharp decline in advertising revenue. That decline is multifaceted and there really isn't a good solution to fixing the problem. As a result, many news outlets are looking for new ways to bring in revenue.

More and more news outlets are starting to charge fees for access to their content. Over the past year, in particular the last six months, there has been a huge jump in the number of people that are paying to access news content.

Daily Kos has been struggling with the same financial hardships that have plagued so many other news outlets. Last year at this time we were forced to make some difficult budget cuts. Unfortunately, we continue to see diminishing advertising revenue.

However, we refuse to make up the revenue deficit by charging for access to our news content. We believe strongly that a healthy and vibrant democracy depends on well-informed citizens. So instead of limiting access with a paywall, we asked the Daily Kos community for help: To donate what they can to support our work and make sure others will always be able to have access to the news.

Daily Kos believes very strongly that everyone, no matter their ability to pay, should have free access to our news content and effective actions. Help make sure that Daily Kos can remain accessible to everyone, no matter their ability to pay. Donate $5 or any amount that is meaningful to you to support our work.
