Dear John,

The cherished Land and Water Conservation Fund – which has done so much to protect redwood forests and other treasured landscapes over the years – is under threat again. Less than three years after the passage of the Great American Outdoors Act assured permanent funding for the LWCF, there comes a move in the U.S. Senate to redirect $100 million in funding meant for land protection, clean water, climate mitigation, and wildlife habitat for other purposes.

We need you to let your senators know that you want to keep these dedicated dollars in the Land and Water Conservation Fund, and that you oppose this rescission. Send your email right now.

This latest move to redirect funding from the LWCF comes from Senate Interior Appropriations Committee which recently passed the $100 million rescission of LWCF funding in its FY24 Interior Appropriations Bill. We need to stop this move before it gains traction. The Land and Water Conservation Fund has been one of America’s most useful and cost-effective conservation programs, using oil drilling revenue instead of taxpayer funds. Muir Woods National Monument and Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks have been enhanced thanks to this funding source, and League projects like Mailliard Ranch, Red Hill, and Alder Creek in Giant Sequoia National Monument, Freshwater Ridge near Redwood National Park, and the Westfall property adjacent to Headwaters Forest Reserve have all relied on LWCF funding.
