PEN America's legal team joined by author George M. Johnson and Escambia resident plaintiffs on the steps of the Fifth Circuit Federal Courthouse.
Dear Friend,
In case you haven’t heard the news: Just yesterday we cleared the first hurdle in our federal lawsuit against the school board of Escambia County, FL for their unlawful banning of books.
I was in the packed courtroom when U.S. District Court Judge Kent Wetherell, a Trump appointee, issued a rare bench ruling saying that this first-of-its-kind lawsuit brought by PEN America, Penguin Random House, banned authors and parents can proceed. The case is not over, but this is a significant win. We couldn’t have waged this battle without the support of people like you who believe in free speech.

Just a few weeks after opening our Florida office, this is an emotional moment for us at PEN America, and one we do not take for granted. Authors have a right to remain on the shelves, and we will not stop until that becomes established law.
With your help, we can win this for readers, writers, free speech, and democracy itself. Join us as we continue to fight for the freedom to read.
With gratitude,
Katie Blankenship
Director, PEN America Florida
