What's in store for 2024
As we step into the new year, we want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your support, which has been instrumental in ensuring that Families in Transition can continue its mission to prevent and break the cycle of homelessness in New Hampshire.
Every day, our community – from service partners to donors to volunteers - enables us to provide invaluable services to families and individuals when they need it the most.
With more than 220+ affordable housing units, 138 adult shelter beds, and 11 family shelter units, through our housing programs and with your unwavering support, families and individuals can achieve stability and maintain permanent housing, breaking the cycle of homelessness.
Finding Community by Cooking Together
It's heartwarming to witness the positive impact that cooking together has had on the residents at our Family Emergency Shelter over the past few months.
The kitchen has transformed into a space not just for nourishment but also for building connections, fostering a sense of community, and providing a source of joy amidst challenging circumstances. It’s incredible to witness these positive moments and appreciate the resilience and support that families extend to one another.
At the family shelter, we actively promote life skills, one of which is preparing dinner. Families visit our Food Pantry ([link removed]) weekly and shop at local grocery stores. This encourages essential skills like budgeting and empowers them with the knowledge and ability to prepare healthy meals. Tackling the social side of isolation, families at the shelter have discovered that cooking together is a great way to build connections among each other.
Two beloved meal choices among the residents of the family shelter are Funfetti Waffles and Chicken Alfredo Zoodles.
Thank you for being a part of this journey and making it possible to go beyond “shelter” to create a learning and supportive environment for those rebuilding their lives.
Providing Nourishment - Meet Joanna!
Joanna Wood is the Director of Food Services at Families in Transition, who joined our team in October. She oversees and manages the operations of our Food Pantry, which provides groceries to 1,000 households a month, as well as our Dining Services, which prepares and serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner to three of our programs – a total of 500 meals every day.
Since becoming a part of the team, Joanna has immersed herself in the daily operations of our food programs, engaging in tasks ranging from preparing meals at the adult shelter to actively participating in the food pantry.
Her motivation for this role stems from a genuine passion for nourishing people and fostering community connections—a value that has always held significance for her.
Notably, before Thanksgiving last year, Joanna collaborated with participants in the family shelter, providing support as they prepared their holiday dinners.
