Friends,
Senator Ed Markey wrote for the Data for Progress Insights page about a topic at the intersection of climate and the economy: The American Climate Corps.
In September 2023, President Biden launched the American Climate Corps to create 20,000 skills-based job opportunities for young people centered on combating the climate disaster.
Data for Progress polled voters when this announcement came out and found that 71% of voters across ages and partisanships support the American Climate Corps:
As Sen. Markey explains on Insights, our polling shows extremely strong support for a comprehensive, fully funded program among voters—which makes sense considering over 42,000 people expressed interest in the 20,000 available slots once the program launched.
Along with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Markey reintroduced the Civilian Climate Corps for Jobs and Justice Act to train and support 1.5 million Americans with good-paying Climate Corps jobs to further spur job creation in the clean energy and climate sectors.
Markey’s Insights post reminds us of the necessity of a climate-focused economy and workforce and lays out steps to ensure a successful implementation of President Biden’s American Climate Corps.
