Ask Your Senators to Extend the 2020 Tax Filing Deadline
Yesterday, in response to disruptions caused by COVID-19, the Treasury Department and IRS announced a due date extension for Federal income tax payments, associated interest, additions to tax, and penalties for late payment to July 15, 2020. This new due date only extends the April 15, 2020 deadline for payments due to the IRS, and applies to payments due of up to $10 million for corporations and up to $1 million for individuals - regardless of filing status – and other unincorporated entities.
Extending the payment deadline without extending the filing deadline will have significant implications for low-income, self-employed and 1099 tax filers, as most free tax-preparation sites for underserved populations, such as the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites have closed or limited operations due to COVID-19. A deferral of tax payments may not help these individuals, and with free tax-preparation sites shut down, these Americans will not get the help they need to timely and accurately file.
In response, Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the Tax Filing Relief for America Act to extend the filing deadline to July 15, 2020. Please take a moment to call your Senators and ask them to co-sponsor this important bill.
