“Ellison sues Minnesota dairy farm for wage theft, substandard housing” – MPR News

John,

Workers deserve to get paid for every hour and every penny they earn – It’s a fundamental American promise, not to mention common sense.

Yet far too often, I hear stories of Minnesotans getting hours shaved off their paychecks, being forced to work off the clock, getting denied overtime pay, having employers try to pay them in gift cards, and being ripped off in so many other ways.

Wage theft is theft – pure and simple. But even though we prosecute people who steal from other people or companies, it’s been historically difficult to hold bad employers accountable for stealing wages from their workers.

That’s why, in 2019, I created a dedicated Wage Theft unit in the Attorney General’s Office with the sole purpose of rooting out wage theft and making sure all Minnesota workers are getting paid what they earn.

As a result of this initiative, our office took action this week against an employer that not only failed to pay at least $3 million in earned wages but illegally charged rent for substandard housing and maintained a culture of fear and violence to discourage reporting, too.

This is a big step toward justice for these workers, and it wouldn’t be possible without you and this grassroots movement we’ve built together, which is why I’m asking:

John, can you pitch in $10, $25, $50, or whatever works for you today so we can build on our progress and continue working together to help people afford their lives and live with safety, dignity, and respect?

Thank you,

Keith Ellison
