Dear John,

In 2016, news of horrific human rights abuses began trickling out of China’s Xinjiang region, home to Uyghurs and other ethnic Turkic groups. Beijing sought to stamp out their targets’ distinct identity and eliminate loyalty to institutions other than the party-state, which is dominated by the Chinese Communist Party.

While Uyghurs in Xinjiang have borne the brunt of this repression, a global diaspora of more than 500,000 has also been affected. Some of its members have been rendered stateless, rely on aid, and otherwise live in fear of what Chinese authorities can do beyond their borders. But governments, civil society, and international bodies can help diaspora Uyghurs live freer and safer lives.

Election Watch: Taiwan

Taiwanese voters head to the polls this weekend. Foreign policy, especially regarding relations with China and the United States, will be a key issue in the election. Taiwan’s vibrant and competitive democratic system has allowed for regular, peaceful transfers of power since 2000, but ongoing concerns include inadequate safeguards against the exploitation of migrant workers and the Chinese government’s influence.

Protecting Journalists in the Israel-Gaza War

At least 79 journalists have been killed in Gaza, Lebanon and Israel since October 7, 2023.

We join other organizations to urge President Biden to ensure all parties respect journalists' rights to report on the conflict.

Tracking Dissent in China

Since June 2022, Freedom House has tracked more than 3,740 dissent events, varying from sign protests to housing protests, and increasingly protests by retirees seeking public benefits from local governments, and religious and ethnic minorities. The fifth issue of the China Dissent Monitor is out now.
