John,
I’ve been described as an indefatigable optimist. I wear it like a badge of honor. I find the positive. I look on the bright side. I don’t give up.
But I’ll be honest, it’s a challenging time to serve right now. Political divisions have made public service bitter to an extent that few can remember it being so bad. Owing to massive Republican failure of leadership, we lost nearly a month of planned time back in the district–with our families and with our constituents. Republicans aren’t focused on governing but on messaging. So nothing gets done.
As a result, we’re watching a massive exodus from the House like we’ve never seen. It’s tough to stay in this role.
So, why stay in a job that’s so divisive and ugly and has real and serious threats to my safety?
Honestly, it’s pretty easy to answer–because quality leadership matters. Because I fear what would happen to our country if representatives with integrity and common sense were driven away by the chaos. Because we don’t back down to bullies like Trump. We keep at it.
When an optimist like me sees the country slipping closer and closer to fascism, I don’t despair. I get to work. It’s officially 2024, and we need all hands on deck. Will you contribute today to help us win big in November and ensure West Michiganders have the quality representation they deserve?
