For Liberty, Tom Zawistowski President We the People Convention DeWine Veto's SAFE Act Now Legislature Must Override Veto Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is getting massive criticism statewide and nationally for his veto today of the SAFE Act that would keep boys out of girls' sports, protect Ohio children from transgender indoctrination, and ban hormone- blocking drugs and gender mutilating surgeries on minors. The most unfortunate thing is that DeWine actually believes the untrue things he said in his announcement defending his veto decision! He said that he was against the bill because he believes that it is better for parents to make the decisions for their children's care instead of the state - referring to "transgender care". Completely ignoring the fact that in the current situation the "state" is forcing 142,074 young girls to have to compete against boys in girls' sports without parents having any say in that decision at all! In fact, DeWine completely avoided the entire issue at the heart of HB 68 which was getting boys out of girls' sports and locker rooms in making his veto! Then the Governor, in an effort to stop the Ohio Legislature from voting to override his veto, said that he would take executive action to address some of the issues in the SAFE Act. Saying that "he would direct state agencies" to begin the rule-making process for restricting gender-affirming surgeries to adults. Well, doesn't that contradict his main reason for vetoing the bill? Isn't having state agencies "rule-making" actually the state telling parents what they can do for their children's health care?? Then the Governor said "his administration will draft rules and restrictions to prevent families from being victimized by “pop-up clinics or fly-by-night operations,” and to assure they receive “adequate counseling” regarding gender-affirming care." Is he serious??? He thinks it is "fly-by-night operations" that are pushing this evil transgender agenda on parents and kids? We have news for the Governor, the left has so bullied and intimidated the entire psychiatric industry that it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to get a psychiatrist anywhere to suggest that your child is not "trans" and that perhaps they just need care for their actual gender dysphoria. It is unqualified teachers and administrators and doctors at major children's and other hospitals that are pushing this destructive medical treatment! But then DeWine showed that he is completely drunk on the Leftist Cool-Aid when he said "Many parents have told me that their child would be dead today if they had not received the treatment (as in trans drugs and surgery) they received from an Ohio children’s hospital." There it is! The kill shot - literally! The lie the left tells every parent to force them into supporting trans-indoctrination - you can have either a dead child or a trans child - take your pick! Yeah, well here is what they didn't tell you, Governor, so that you would be fooled as well, "Ten to 15 years after surgical reassignment, the suicide rate of those who had undergone sex-reassignment surgery rose to 20 times that of comparable peers." So while the Governor clearly made the wrong decision, ignore that! Our focus needs to be on making sure that the House and the Senate vote to Override his Veto. The SAFE ACT was passed in December with veto proof majorities! They can call a special session for that purpose right after New Years, or they can do it when the House reconvenes in January. HB 68 will: “[Prohibit] a physician from knowingly performing gender reassignment surgery” — which is not permitted in Ohio’s children’s hospital — and from “knowingly providing” hormone replacement therapy drugs to transgender patients who are under age 18. “Establishes penalties for physicians and mental health professionals who engage in conduct the bill prohibits.” “Prohibits a physician from aiding or abetting those prohibited practices.” “[Require] that prior to a mental health professional diagnosing or treating a minor for gender-related conditions, they must obtain parental consent and screen the minor for other comorbidities, abuse and trauma.” Prevent Medicaid from offering coverage for gender-affirming healthcare for minors, but it may still be permitted to cover limited mental health services for transgender people. Prevent the court from removing a transgender child from a parent or guardian’s custody in the event that they reject the transgender child and deny them access to healthcare. In addition to banning healthcare for transgender youth, HB 68 was amended to include House Bill 6 “Save Women’s Sports Act,” which bans transgender girls from competing in sports from kindergarten through college, including private and public institutions.
