# [#]January is Poverty Awareness Month, which means we must shed light on the struggle millions of Americans face every day – and what we can do to alleviate this crisis.
One of the fundamental pillars of the work to end poverty is housing. Our country is experiencing a worsening affordable housing crisis, and San Diego is no exception.
Because of this severe lack of affordable housing, individuals are often forced to move far away from where they work.
To remedy this problem, I recently introduced a bipartisan bill that would facilitate the construction of more housing near transit centers. On top of increased access to affordable homes, this proposed investment in public transportation also serves to cut carbon emissions by growing ridership and getting cars off the road.
This is the type of common-sense solution that will make a huge difference for our communities. If you agree, add your name here to support substantive action to address housing affordability → [[link removed]]SIGN ON [[link removed]]
Research shows that the U.S. has a shortage of over 7 million affordable rental homes, and that over 11 million Americans spend upwards of 50% of their income on housing.
If we’re going to tackle poverty, boost our economies, and help families everywhere to thrive, we must address housing affordability.
I’m committed to finding solutions in Congress.
