Synthetic Data Is a Dangerous Teacher - WIRED (Full Access)

In April 2022, when Dall-E, a text-to-image visio-linguistic model, was released, it purportedly attracted over a million users within the first three months. This was followed by ChatGPT, in January 2023, which apparently reached 100 million monthly active users just two months after launch. Both mark notable moments in the development of generative AI, which in turn has brought forth an explosion of AI-generated content into the web. The bad news is that, in 2024, this means we will also see an explosion of fabricated, nonsensical information, mis- and disinformation, and the exacerbation of social negative stereotypes encoded in these AI models.

The AI revolution wasn’t spurred by any recent theoretical breakthrough—indeed, most of the foundational work underlying artificial neural networks has been around for decades—but by the “availability” of massive data sets. Ideally, an AI model captures a given phenomena—be it human language, cognition, or the visual world—in a way that is representative of the real phenomena as closely as possible.

Gene Editing Needs to Be for Everyone - WIRED (Full Access)

At the end of 2023, we witnessed an important moment in the history of medicine: For the first time, the US Food and Drug Administration approved a therapy that uses Crispr gene editing. This new therapy was developed by Crispr Therapeutics and Vertex Pharmaceuticals to treat sickle cell disease, an ailment caused by a single-letter mutation in the genetic code that has been long understood but was neglected by the research community for decades.

This is a major milestone for gene editing in medicine, and specifically for the sickle cell community, who have long awaited better treatment options. The outlook for this therapy is better than we could have hoped. Victoria Gray, one of the first patients in the US to receive the therapy in a clinical trial, is symptom-free four years later. Indeed, this may prove to be not just a therapy but a cure.

There are further Crispr-based therapies coming close on its heels, treating conditions such as high cholesterol, inflammatory disease, and chronic infections. But it’s not time for a victory lap for the field of gene-editing therapies: The race is just beginning.

To Make an Impact, Join Tech’s Exodus - WIRED (Full Access)

The gulf between tech and government is legendary. In the 2010s, tech talent flocked to startups and big platforms where they could move fast, break things, and get people to click on ads. Venture capital flowed freely as firms jumped further and faster to stake a claim in businesses that prized user acquisition above all else. With the exception of a handful of firms, the single easiest way to NOT get funded during those boom years was to list government as a market in your pitch deck. Too slow, too uncertain, too irrational.

By 2024, tech's distaste for government will have transformed into a healthy appetite. Talent has already made that shift. Thousands of engineers, product managers, user researchers, and data scientists have been flocking to government tech job fairs. Execs have been taking leadership key roles at agencies. Layoffs in the tech sector will get the credit for much of this migration, but a closer look at where these people are going suggests that desire for impact is the key driver.

Technologists shocked at the nation's Covid response have joined the US Centers for Disease Controls and Prevention (CDC). Desire to help Ukraine and prevent a showdown in Taiwan has attracted talent to the US State Department and the military. In states that have authorized paid family leave, computer engineers are raising their hands to help implement these programs. Many are looking back at their careers and wishing for something more meaningful.
