In the aftermath of the January 6th insurrection, far-right media started to latch onto a new conspiracy theory: that undercover FBI agents were the ones who instigated the violence at the Capitol.

Tucker Carlson started to spread the conspiracy theory on his shows, and it didn’t take long for Trump supporters in Congress to seize on the theory, which conveniently deflected blame for the attack from Donald Trump himself onto “the deep state.”

CREW did a deep dive and found that 16 members of Congress have spread, or at least entertained, a conspiracy theory that the January 6th insurrection was an “inside job” led by the FBI.

Let me be clear: that is 16 too many.

On January 6, 2022, Representatives Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene held a press conference on the theory, saying that January 6th was not an insurrection, “but it very well may have been a fedsurrection.” Senator Ted Cruz asked about it in a hearing, and even sent a fundraising email promoting the theory.

Despite evidence to the contrary—and repeated debunking—the fedsurrection theory has continued to spread.

Much like the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election, which led directly to the insurrection, the rejection of basic facts about what happened on January 6th risks destabilizing American democracy to help Donald Trump become president again.

CREW is doing everything in our power to call out these lies and threats to our democracy. Representatives Clay Higgins, Troy Nehls, Thomas Massie, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Andy Biggs, Eli Crane, Madison Cawthorn, Louie Gohmert and Jim Jordan and Senators Ron Johnson, J.D. Vance, Tom Cotton, Mike Lee and Ted Cruz have all spread or at least entertained this dangerous conspiracy theory.

And members of Congress are not alone: Donald Trump Jr., Kari Lake, Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy have all pushed the fedsurrection narrative this year.

John, the more this baseless theory takes root, the more challenging it will become for our nation to prevent another insurrection. If we can’t agree on the facts, how can we agree on a way forward?

By doing investigations like this one, CREW is fighting for the truth. We’re taking action to hold insurrectionists accountable, and we need your help to do it. Please make a donation to CREW to help us continue this work → [[link removed]]
