Supporting Border Communities Like San Diego
I’m so proud to represent one of our country’s most vibrant border communities. California has a long history of welcoming migrants and refugees, helping to build San Diego County into the dynamic, diverse community we know and love. We also know that our immigration system is badly broken. That’s why I’m focused on making sure San Diego and other border communities have the resources necessary to keep our country safe while treating those who come to our country with dignity and respect.
Last week, I went to the San Ysidro Port of Entry on one of my regular border visits. Border Patrol and CBP agree that cruel and inhumane solutions, like restricting asylum, aren’t a solution – what we really need is comprehensive and inclusive immigration reform to address the asylum case backlog, hire more immigration judges and asylum case officers, and fund programs like the Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) that support border communities.
Combatting Homelessness in San Diego
Ending homelessness will be difficult – but working together, it’s possible. That’s why I’m so grateful for Urban Street Angels’ work to provide temporary and long-term housing, support services, and job training to young people in our community who are experiencing homelessness. Last week, I toured their facility and met the young people benefitting from their services.
I’m working in Congress to address homelessness – especially youth, family, and veteran homelessness – by expanding the housing supply and bringing down costs.
