Daily Docket — Tuesday, Jan. 9

Here are some redistricting updates.

  • A federal judge adopted new legislative districts in North Dakota that give Native American voters the opportunity to elect their candidates of choice. The court struck down the previous map for violating the Voting Rights Act. Read more about the decision here.

  • Louisiana's newly sworn-in Gov. Jeff Landry (R) called the Legislature into a special session beginning on Jan. 15 to redraw the state's congressional map after a federal court ruled the map violates the Voting Rights Act by diluting Black voting power.

    • The Legislature will also redraw the districts for the state Supreme Court. The 5th Circuit upheld a 1992 consent decree requiring a majority-Black district for state Supreme Court elections, but a new GOP-drawn map could jeopardize this district.

Here are some other updates you may have missed.

  • A Wisconsin judge rejected parts of a lawsuit brought by the right-wing legal group Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) that sought to limit the availability of early, in-person absentee voting sites in the city of Racine.

    • This wasn’t the only anti-voting lawsuit brought by WILL. Look out for a new article tomorrow morning all about the little-known Wisconsin legal group wreaking havoc on our democracy.

  • Nashville launched a new program to help eligible voters in county jails navigate voter registration, the mail-in voting process, voting rights restoration and more.

  • A federal appeals court in Washington, D.C. heard oral argument today on whether former President Donald Trump has presidential immunity and cannot be prosecuted in his 2020 election subversion case.

  • Trial began in Georgia in a lawsuit challenging the use of electronic voting machines in the state. Plaintiffs argue that the machines are easily manipulated and unconstitutional and must be banned.

Here’s what’s coming up tomorrow.

  • At 10 a.m. EST, a federal district court in North Carolina will hold a hearing in a lawsuit filed on behalf of two Black voters challenging the Republican-drawn state Senate map.
