Joe Manchin isn’t running to represent the people of West Virginia in the United States Senate.

But I am.

I’m Zach Shrewsbury. I’m a Marine Corps veteran, a working-class Democrat, a proud father, and a lifelong West Virginian. I’m also the only Democrat in the race, making our candidacy not just a campaign for one seat, but a pivotal moment for maintaining Democratic control of the Senate. Our vision for West Virginia is clear: a state thriving with new opportunities, embracing robust renewable energy investments, and ensuring universal healthcare for all.

So why am I the right candidate for the people of West Virginia? Because we always deserved better than we got in Joe Manchin.

• It’s not acceptable that working families have been sacrificed at the altar of corporations and their DC lobbyists.

• It’s not acceptable that extreme politicians threaten our right to vote, or access to the polls.

• It’s not acceptable that a full-time job doesn’t pay a living wage or that paid leave is not required by law everywhere in our country.

• It’s not acceptable that people in Texas and Georgia and South Carolina can be criminally prosecuted for trying to access healthcare when we could have codified Roe for everyone.

Our country isn’t working for the majority of working people. Republicans funded by big corporate interests have rigged the game against families, making it difficult to get ahead. The elected leaders we send to Washington must be accountable to the people they represent, and they must prove to voters that democracy can work for them.

My political opinions started to form when I joined the Marine Corps and were influenced by the Occupy Wall Street movement and later, by my organizing work as a climate activist. Seeing people around me working hard yet unable to make ends meet made me realize how it is not the merit that matters in our country but whether you have a wealthy family, what network you can lean on, and what advantages your upbringing provides. The United States is no longer a land of opportunity for my generation, but this is precisely why we are running this campaign.
