Friend—Ohio found a way to stop trans people from running for office.

Using a rarely enforced law about including a candidate’s former names on ballot petitions, elections officials disqualified a trans candidate for State House because she didn’t include her deadname while gathering signatures.

“This will be a huge barrier to entry for transgender people,” said Ohio State House candidate Vanessa Joy. She noted the law was applied unevenly and will disqualify and dissuade more transgender candidates from running for office, given they have to potentially out their deadname to their whole community. A second Ohio candidate’s ballot placement is already in doubt.

We need federal protections for LGBTQIA+ people. This is just one case in which unrelated laws have been maliciously applied to discriminate against trans and queer people in public life.

My first act in Congress will be to introduce The Protect LGBTQIA+ People Act. With 2023 seeing a record number of anti-LGBTQIA+ bills introduced and passed into law nationwide, we need at least one out of the 435 members of Congress to represent and stand up for the transgender community.

We had several requests to see the ad we mentioned right before the new year, the one that had 75% of viewers say they’d likely vote for Maebe after watching.

This is it. Voters in CA-30 want a representative who will protect our most vulnerable and ensure freedom and opportunity for all, and the response to this ad proves it.

We’ve been able to reach about 35% of likely primary voters with this ad so far, but we need to up our fundraising to reach the rest and advance in this top-two primary.

Can you pitch in and help us get out the vote, reaching these voters before ballots go out in the mail on February 5th?

We’re participating in forums, putting up signs, canvassing, and connecting with voters every day from here until March 5th.

Times are tough for LGBTQIA+ people right now, but with your support and the enheartening response from my community I’m confident we can come together to help all of us thrive.

In solidarity,

Maebe
