Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Happy New Year! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season. It has already been a busy start to 2024, and CRES has hit the ground running. Last week, I joined Miss America 2023 Grace Stanke in authoring an op-ed reflecting on a resounding agreement from COP28 late last year: Nuclear energy is the key to a clean future. As Congress returns, CRES will work to ensure—between the looming deadlines, funding priorities, and other business—lawmakers continue to prioritize the advancement of clean, low-carbon energy technologies and support American innovation.
Other news you may have heard: CRES Clean Energy Champion and Conservative Climate Caucus Chairman John Curtis (R-Utah) is running for Utah’s open seat in the U.S. Senate. CRES was proud to be one of the first organizations to endorse him, and I believe his election to the Senate will not only benefit the people of Utah but will serve as a catalyst for conservative climate politics.
Rep. Curtis stated his climate message has proven successful in his R+13, traditionally coal, oil, and gas-producing district because it doesn’t alienate conservatives. He believes – and I agree – his stance on climate will make him more competitive in a state like Utah, which values stewardship of our lands and our environment. Dive into more details on his race from Josh Siegel on the POLITICO Energy podcast HERE.
Rep. Curtis’ message is one that has echoed throughout the halls of Congress since the founding of the Conservative Climate Caucus – and one that CRES has long believed in: Republicans care about leaving our planet better than we found it, and we have the solutions to address climate change that balance environmental protection and economic prosperity.
I am optimistic that this theme will ring through the 2024 elections and beyond. With the Iowa caucuses around the corner, November will be here sooner than we know it. I am looking forward to working with Republicans to ensure that voters across the country know conservatives are at the table—with effective climate solutions—and we are here to stay.
Sincerely,
|

“Conservatives need to be here. We need a seat at the table.” – Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) in a recent interview with Savannah Morning News.

“The fact is, the United States is a global leader in reducing emissions, and North Dakota has been an important driver of that. Contrary to the narrative coming from many on the environmental left, the best way to reduce emissions is to empower innovation and technological advancements, not double down on burdensome regulations that do nothing to keep the air and water clean.” – House Energy and Commerce Vice Chair Kelly Armstrong (R-N.D.) in his op-ed recapping his trip to COP28 and North Dakota’s important role in clean energy production.

“This was my third year attending COP, and I was honored to travel with a bipartisan Congressional Delegation from the Energy and Commerce Committee, and I was honored to advocate for agriculture and American leadership in the clean energy space. As the Vice Chair of the Conservative Climate Caucus, I was also honored to attend COP and share ways that conservatives are pragmatically approaching solutions to climate by working to reduce emissions while keeping energy affordable and abundant and assuring energy security.” – Conservative Climate Caucus Vice Chair Mariannette Miller-Meeks in her op-ed outlining her engagement at COP28 and how she shared Iowa’s clean energy story in Dubai.

About Rep. John Curtis for U.S. Senate...
“Rep. John Curtis has proven himself a groundbreaking leader in the House of Representatives spearheading the Conservative Climate Caucus, which has already made huge advancements in public awareness of conservative engagement on energy issues and promoting Republican principles to improve the climate.” – CRES President Heather Reams in a statement endorsing Rep. Curtis. Read the full endorsement HERE.

About Funding Awards for Carbon Capture...
“Carbon capture is an essential piece of our domestic energy make up and growth. These facilities in North Dakota, California, and Texas will capture carbon from coal and natural gas production, allowing the United States to continue leading the world in reducing emissions, while providing reliable energy. These investments – enabled by bipartisan funding from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and fueled by American innovation – are examples of solutions we need to lower our carbon footprint, strengthen local communities, and maintain good-paying American jobs.” – CRES President Heather Reams in a statement applauding the U.S. Department of Energy announcement to award $890 million to developers of three large-scale carbon capture projects. “The expansion of nuclear energy in the United States is not only a chance to show American leadership and competitiveness on a global stage; it is an opportunity to grow our own economy, create jobs, and provide cleaner, reliable, and affordable energy to all. As clean energy advocates, we look forward to continuing to work with lawmakers to advance policies that will accelerate nuclear power generation here in the U.S. as we continue to lead the world.” – CRES President Heather Reams and 2023 Miss America Grace Stanke in a joint op-ed titled, “There is No Clean Future Without Nuclear Energy"
