Community Justice Applauds Governor Wes Moore’s Proposal for Maryland Center for Firearm Prevention and Intervention
Annapolis, MD –– Today, Community Justice joined Governor Wes Moore (D-MD) to unveil his proposal for a statewide Maryland Center for Firearm Prevention and Intervention. The proposed legislation to estable the innovative Center marks a significant step towards a proactive and comprehensive approach to address and reduce gun violence across the state.
Community Justice has been a leader in advocating alongside local community violence intervention (CVI) frontline workers for increased funding and support for violence prevention in Maryland. Last year, the organization played a crucial role in drafting legislation to increase state funding for CVI initiatives from $3 million to $40 million. Additionally, Community Justice led the Maryland Violence Coalition in engaging with Governor Moore’s office to craft the language for the proposed legislation to create the statewide Center.
"The proposed Center for Firearm Prevention and Intervention marks a profound investment in the lives of Marylanders, especially those most affected by the trauma of gun violence," said Tarria Stanley, Community Justice Advocacy Associate. "For too long, our strategies in combating gun violence have only been reactive, addressing the aftermath rather than preempting the root causes of violence. Governor Moore's announcement marks a pivotal shift towards a comprehensive, public health-centered strategy to tackle this crisis facing Maryland families. Community Justice is proud to have led the charge to establish the Center and we are hopeful that it will serve as a model for other states to follow."
Community Justice's input has been instrumental in shaping the vision and scope of the Center, ensuring it aligns with the needs of communities most impacted by gun violence. Set to be housed within the Maryland Department of Health, the new Center for Firearm Prevention and Intervention will collaborate closely with a wide range of stakeholders, including public health experts, law enforcement agencies, community-based groups and non-governmental gun violence prevention organizations. This cross-sectoral approach aims to address the multifaceted nature of gun violence, ensuring more effective and sustainable solutions.
"Today's announcement is a testament to the power of advocacy, partnership, and a shared vision for a safer Maryland," said Amber Goodwin, Founder of Community Justice. "The proposed Center for Firearm Prevention and Intervention is a beacon of hope and will continue to follow the trend of states addressing gun violence as a public health crisis. We commend Governor Moore and his administration for taking a historic step towards ending gun violence in Maryland, and look forward to continued partnership with his team to advance this legislative priority in the upcoming session.”
