Kirby Winfield, founding general partner of Seattle pre-seed venture capital firm Ascend just shared his incredibly smart formula for entrepreneurs to request "warm" introductions from their investors. The instructions are clear, sensible, can easily be followed by anyone with a LinkedIn account, and should work for anyone seeking business introductions for almost any purpose. The artificial intelligence revolution in business has barely started, but high drama and potential legal troubles at OpenAI may offer an early, useful lesson on the pitfalls of depending on one form of technology.

Many companies that use OpenAI applications are seeking alternative A.I. options to reduce the risk of losing the benefits of the new technology, according to the Wall Street Journal. OpenAI, creator of the popular ChatGPT application that's captured market- and mindshare, was roiled by management turmoil last November, and the closely watched saga prompted many executives to check on how much they depended on one company for their A.I. needs.

What Your Small Business Can Learn From a Little Helicopter on Mars - Inc.com (Full Access)

A couple hundred million miles away from Earth, a tiny four-pound box of electronics is busy making history. Ingenuity, a small autonomous helicopter launched to Mars in 2020, has now powered up its tiny rotor blades and flown for the 70th time, traveling 850 feet and photographing the Red Planet's rocky surface throughout its journey. Its longevity is another incredible feat for the first aircraft to fly under its own power on a planet other than Earth. But Ingenuity's story is also packed with lessons for smaller enterprises here on its home planet.

Ingenuity flew to Mars in 2020 as part of NASA's Perseverance rover mission. That's one of those multibillion-dollar, planned-for-decades science missions that NASA does so well--this time searching for signs of ancient life on Mars. But the Ingenuity program, run out of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, was more or less an afterthought, quickly conceived, approved, funded, and built in time to hitch a ride on Perseverance. There was even opposition to the whole idea, including accusations Ingenuity might "distract" scientists from other more important tasks during the flagship rover mission.

When I was in the private wealth management advisor seat, I always met with my clients at year-end to plan for the year ahead. This is standard practice within the wealth management world. What's interesting is that we all naturally do this, at year-end--we plan for the year ahead. The start of a new year is always a great time to set goals and develop a strategy for achieving those goals, financial goals included. Here's a step-by-step guide to setting and achieving your financial goals in the new year.

The only place to start your financial wealth creation journey is to start where you're at. This requires assessing your current financial situation. I know, it doesn't sound like fun but intentionally carving out the time to assess your financial well-being is imperative. You can carve out the time by creating a meeting with yourself--actually schedule the meeting on your calendar--and dedicate at least one hour to reviewing your current income, expenses, cash balance, investments, assets, and liabilities. Understanding where you are at, will help to inform where you want to go. In other words, it will help you in setting realistic financial goals for the year ahead.

Everyone's financial goals are different and unique based on their circumstances. Perhaps your financial goal is to pay down a large debt or to increase your savings by X amount by the end of the year. Further, some people may opt for short-term goals and/or long-term goals. Regardless of the type, embracing a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound financial goal is smart. It's S.M.A.R.T. This acronym is a great guide for financial goal setting.
