On October 17th, an Israeli airstrike destroyed a house in Nuseirat camp in central Gaza – an area the IDF steered Gazans to that was supposed to be a safe zone. Inside that house was the family of Wael al-Dahdouh. His wife, son, daughter and grandson all died.
Hours later, Wael was back on the air, reporting for Al Jazeera. Wael told his colleague:
“My siblings and cousins were there, too, and my daughters are all injured. But I suppose I should thank God that at least some of my family survived.”
Now another member of his family has been murdered – Wael’s eldest son Hamza, himself a journalist, was killed by an Israeli drone strike several days ago.
As a husband and a father – hell, as a human being – I can only begin to comprehend the magnitude of his grief. And that grief is magnified by the credible evidence that Wael and his family are being deliberately targeted for extermination.
Let’s be clear: Deliberately targeting journalists is a war crime. Full stop.
Add this to the list of war crimes resting on the heads of Netanyahu’s entire cabinet, and the path forward is clear:
One: The United States must immediately cease military aid to the apartheid state of Israel.
Two: We need an immediate cessation of hostilities followed by an end to the occupation and a permanent ceasefire.
Three: Netanyahu and his criminal cabinet must be prosecuted for war crimes.
Lastly, I fully support the Committee to Protect Journalists and their call to investigate the murders of Hamza al-Dahdouh and Mustafa Thuraya to determine if they were, in fact, deliberately targeted as journalists – a clear violation of international law.
In support of that effort, I hope you will join me today in a contribution to The Committee to Protect Journalists.
