Daily Docket — Monday, Jan. 8

Here are some recent updates.

  • A federal court upheld Ohio law House Bill 458, ruling in favor of GOP state officials. Voters and progressive groups argued that the law — which enacts new voter ID rules, limits drop boxes, moves up ballot deadlines and more — was unconstitutional.

  • Former President Donald Trump moved to dismiss the Fulton County, Georgia election subversion case, claiming he has immunity from actions taken while serving as president. This argument mirrors the defense made in Trump's separate federal Jan. 6 case.

  • Abe Hamadeh (R) filed a lawsuit seeking to remove Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes (D) from office and instate himself as attorney general. This case — filed in December 2023 — is the third lawsuit Hamadeh has filed to overturn his 2022 loss to Mayes.

  • The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed a conspiracy theory-riddled Oregon lawsuit that sought to dismantle the state's mail-in voting system and ban electronic voting machines.

  • A right-wing group appealed a decision — which dismissed a lawsuit challenging a new state law that restores voting rights to people convicted of a felony upon release from incarceration — to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Here’s what’s coming up tomorrow.

  • Trial will begin in a lawsuit brought by a conservative group against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) challenging the use of electronic voting machines in the Peach State.

  • At 9:30 a.m. EST, the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will hold oral argument in Trump’s 2020 election subversion case to determine whether Trump is immune from federal prosecution.
