Private beds for the NHS

Everyone knows we’re in a crisis. Nowhere is it more urgent than in healthcare. And yet the UK is still largely stuck in a business as usual approach.

The Spanish government have led the way by taking over private hospitals to work for the public. We need to do this too, and fast.

But instead, Boris Johnson wants to make sure private healthcare companies can make a profit from renting beds to the NHS.

We're in a national crisis, and our NHS is going to be under more and more strain. Right now, the government is renting 8,000 hospital beds from the private sector at a cost of £2.4 million per day.

This is a staggering waste of public money. GMB estimates that there are around 570 private hospitals in the UK, with around 8,000 beds. Now more than ever, we need to have our public services run for people, not profit.

To deal with coronavirus, the government must bring all private hospitals into public ownership.

In times like these, we need everyone to pull together. And it’s clear that as a population, we’re capable of looking after each other - whether it’s checking up on our neighbours, or donating to foodbanks.

But we can’t do this alone. Our government and our public services need to be there for us in this crisis. Every penny of public money should be used on helping those who are unwell, not going to private corporations who compete with the NHS.

Let’s take a leaf out of Spain’s book, and take over private hospitals for public benefit.
