**Would you give $1.30 a day to help feed a hungry child?** What if you had $48 million to fund $1.30 a day to feed 400,000 Oklahoma children facing a summer of food insecurity? Would you help feed those children? **Gov. Kevin Stitt wouldn’t, and he won’t** – because he cares more about playing politics than he does about helping Oklahoma children. **I’m running for Congress in Oklahoma’s First District because I believe Oklahoma’s children are more important than politics.**
**MAGA Rep. Kevin Hern was the first obstacle to Democratic efforts to address food insecurity faced by children** while school is out during the summer. **Hern voted NO to HR 2617** , the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023. That Act allowed the USDA to continue a program to provide low-income families $40 a month per school-aged child to help cover the cost of groceries. Fortunately, a Democratic Congress passed it.
**Gov. Stitt was the second obstacle – this week he said NO to this program for Oklahoma children. Stitt and Hern said NO to 400,000 hungry Oklahoma children. They said NO to $1.30 a day for the one-in-five Oklahoma children living in poverty.**
I live a mile from the Arkansas River, and I run on the trail there. When I run, I often think about the above photo taken in June 1939 by the Farm Security Administration. It’s a photo of a family living in a tent along the Arkansas River in Muskogee. There were many Oklahoma families living like that in 1939. It makes me think of today, and the thousands of Oklahoma families being washed down the river of poverty who need our help. I think of Stitt and Hern who turned their backs on their fellow Oklahomans.
We must pull as many as we can from the river of poverty, but at some point, we need to walk up stream and see what’s pushing so many Oklahomans into the water. **That point is now – with this election.** We must stop dismissing poverty as a moral issue or a work ethic issue when at its roots, **it’s an opportunity issue. It’s a public-school funding issue. It’s a living wage issue. It’s an affordable housing issue.**
**With your help, I’ll be your Representative in Congress who will walk up that river and work to solve those problems.** Oklahoma has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. No Oklahoman should be proud of that or tolerate it. Stitt is blocking $48 million dollars that should be going to help Oklahoma children. **I pledge to you I will never tolerate Oklahoma children going hungry because elected officials are playing politics.** I want Oklahoma moving forward. **This state will not go back to 1939. That photo is history. With your help, it will not be Oklahoma’s destiny.**
