John,
One of my favorite things to do in Hallowell is walk down Main Street and visit the local shops and restaurants, all with their own unique flavors and style.
My family and I love dining at Slate’s Bakery, getting coffee at Traverse, handmade protein bars at Juiced and and shopping locally at places like Boynton’s and Hallowell Clay Works. But with social distancing in place and many businesses forced to close their doors in this time of crisis, how can we support them so that they can survive?
Congress and our state government are working on relief legislation of all kinds, and a few hundred of Maine’s 147,270+ small business owners have signed a letter urging Governor Janet Mills [[link removed]] to act swiftly.
But there are things you and I can do right now that could mean the difference between keeping our favorite local places alive and them having to keep their doors shut for good.
Here’s how you can help:
 *
   Shop
   online
   through
   local
   business
   websites
   -
   Many
   small
   shops
   have
   online
   stores,
   and
   many
   restaurants
   are
   offering
   delivery
   options
   that
   weren’t
   previously
   available.

 *
   Buy
   gift
   certificates
   -
   Consider
   getting
   some
   of
   next
   winter’s
   holiday
   shopping
   done
   now.
   Treat
   a
   friend.
   Treat
   yourself!

 *
   Send
   me
   your
   favorite
   local
   spots
   [
[email protected]?subject=Small%20Business%20shout%20out]
   .
   I’ll
   be
   starting
   conversations
   on
   Facebook,
   Twitter
   and
   Instagram
   where
   we
   can
   all
   give
   shout
   outs
   to
   the
   small
   businesses
   we
   love
   --
   and
   drop
   links
   for
   their
   websites,
   too!

John, while we move through this unique time, we have a great opportunity to show the world what Mainers are all about. We have a chance to practice kindness and compassion and think creatively about supporting each other in all the ways we can.
In Solidarity,
