NEWS FROM POWER TO DECIDE
Our Newest Power Player
We’re committed to uplifting the many individuals supporting young people’s reproductive well-being. Our latest Power Player is Dr. Ndidiamaka Amutah-Onukagha. Read her story ([link removed]) .
Thank You to Our Fellows
We want to take a moment to express our gratitude to our three Digital Team Fellows whose fellowships are ending next month: Thamara Aridou, Karissa Samonte, and Anna Sorensen. Their dedication, innovative spirit, and tireless efforts on AbortionFinder ([link removed]) and the Bedsider Clinic Finder ([link removed]) have significantly enriched Power to Decide’s impact and ensured that folks seeking reproductive health services and abortion care and support get the information they need to access care. We are immensely grateful for their invaluable service, and we look forward to witnessing the continued positive influence of their work in the broader community. Thank you, Anna, Karissa, and Thamara!
New Year, New Approach
Ring in the New Year with our One Key Question® online, interactive training ([link removed]) ! This patient-centered approach supports providers in navigating conversations and understanding patient goals about if, when, and under what circumstances they want to get pregnant and have a child. Our online companion training, Preconception and Contraception Pathways to Care ([link removed]) , takes that conversation one step further by teaching providers how to offer follow-up care based on the client’s response, in a personalized, non-judgmental, and unbiased way.
Increase patient satisfaction and promote reproductive autonomy in 2024 by enrolling now! Simply visit our online shop ([link removed]) to begin your training.
OPA Grant Recipients Innovating Together
The Office of Population Affairs (OPA) recently released 17 new journal articles in a special supplement of Prevention Science that discuss innovative interventions by Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) grant recipients to reduce teen pregnancy disparities and advance the field of adolescent sexual health. Power to Decide is excited to see that our work using human-centered design and innovation is featured in this series of articles.
Articles include:
* Catalyzing Technology-Based Innovation in Teen Pregnancy Prevention: an Implementation Model and Findings from a Human-Centered Design Initiative ([link removed]) (co-authored by Sarah Axelson ([link removed]) , Senior Director, Innovation, Training, and TA and Riley Steiner ([link removed]) , Senior Director, Research and Evaluation).
* Addressing Evaluation Barriers with Early Innovation Development for Adolescent-Focused Sexual and Reproductive Health Interventions ([link removed]) (co-authored by Sarah Axelson).
* Using Human-Centered Design Strategies to Identify Unmet Adolescent Sexual Health Wants and Needs ([link removed]) (co-authored by Christina Leos ([link removed]) , one of the first cohort of Innovation Next innovators).
Innovation at OPA refers to a community-driven and disciplined process of finding solutions to some of the most complex public health challenges. It also reflects a broad spectrum of new or adapted products, programming, strategies, approaches, interventions, policies, and practices that propel their mission of advancing health across the reproductive lifespan. POLICY UPDATES
Federal Update
Government Funding Still Uncertain in the New Year
Congress has not made substantial progress on appropriations since passing a continuing resolution (CR) on November 15—a stopgap measure to keep the government funded at current levels. The CR funds domestic appropriations bills—including Labor, Health, and Human Services and Education (LHHS), which funds the Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program and the Title X Family Planning Program—through February 2, 2024. There is still time to take action—remind your representatives about the significance of these programs for our communities and urge members of Congress ([link removed]) to fully fund them.
National Defense Authorization Act
In December the House and Senate passed the FY 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which the president has signed into law. Despite the efforts of some members of Congress to further restrict access to abortion services and gender affirming care for servicemembers and their families, the final NDAA bill did not include these restrictions. However, it also did not include a provision to eliminate contraceptive co-pays for all servicemembers and their families. This is disappointing—servicemembers and their families should not have less contraceptive coverage than the civilians they protect. Power to Decide will continue to push for Congress to address this fundamental inequity.
State Update
Legislative sessions will commence in thirty-two states during the first half of January. Find important session dates ([link removed]) for your state and then sign up ([link removed]) for Beyond the Beltway Bulletin ([link removed]) to get monthly state policy updates from Power to Decide.
