John,

This is the moment when our federal government must step up: to give relief to impacted Americans; and to build the solutions that will resolve this crisis.

The first need is immediate; we need direct economic aid. Countless people have already lost work, lost business, and lost control over their financial situations. We live in a country where 40% of us cannot afford $400 in an emergency. The tremendous inequality of wealth has made us even more vulnerable to a crisis like this one.

For restaurant workers and construction workers, for drivers and musicians — for so many of us, immediate cash payments from the U.S. Treasury will provide an essential lifeline.

But that will not be enough. We have a broken healthcare system that is unequipped to handle this crisis. Rural hospitals have been closing. We lack essential supplies like testing kits and critical equipment like ventilators. We cannot rely on international supply chains as borders are closing and our trading partners have their own crises to address.

We must act now to build the solutions we need. After calls from citizens and lawmakers, Donald Trump invoked the Defense Production Act — a law that allows the government to take control of the crisis and begin producing the equipment that our country so desperately needs. Unfortunately, he has not taken any concrete steps using this authority.

Under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, when the time came to enter World War II and fight fascism abroad, we took decisive action. FDR convened the captains of industry and innovation to address the need for war materials. He used the Treasury to guide investment: to build facilities where U.S. manufacturers could immediately begin the construction of tanks, jets, ships, and more.

We need a similar, immediate, and massive show of leadership from the Executive Branch today. We also need the Legislative Branch to step up as a co-equal branch of government with the power of the purse.

Some positive steps have been taken, but we need to continue pushing for smart economic policy. And we need to establish a commitment: that as a nation we will use our resources to protect the lives of the people.

Let’s work to come out of this crisis stronger than ever. Let’s come out of this crisis together.

Fighting for you,
Mike Siegel
