On December 14, 2023, Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a resolution that falsely implies that Israel is committing gross violations of human rights in its effort to defend itself from Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attack. His goal is to ultimately terminate aid to Israel.

The resolution requires the State Department to issue a report on alleged Israeli human rights violations. If the State Department fails to issue the report within 30 days, all U.S. security assistance to Israel would be cut.

For decades, both Republican and Democratic administrations have provided support and security assistance to Israel without linking our aid to specific Israeli policies. Such conditioning would undermine U.S. national security interests.

U.S. assistance and support of Israel helps ensure that Israel has the means necessary to defend itself—by itself—against growing threats from Iran and its terror proxies, including Hamas in Gaza and the West Bank, Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, and militias in Iraq and Syria.

Congress must continue to stand by Israel in its fight against Hamas and give Israel the time and space to defend its citizens.
